In 1953, the class changed from the 48 cubic inch Runabout class to the 44 cubic inch Runabout class. What this means is that the engine also changed, hence the drop in speed. The 48 runabout engines were fully modified and more powerful.  When the class changed to the 44 runabout the new rules stated that the engine had to become strictly stock for 1953 and beyond. That's the reason for the speed drop in the class because the engines were less powerful.
