How do I place photos in my post?
(Before reading further - If that photo is already posted on the internet, click here for instructions on posting that photo into your post on the boards)
Directions for posting photos on the boards, using Photobucket.com
Instructions at photobucket.com are fairly easy to use. Basically, you will be uploading & storing your photos at that site. First join, (it's free) photobucket.com, and if you want, start uploading your photos into 'your photo album' on that website. It is very straightforward.......you can add them on the photobucket website....or you can immediately go to the board, log into photobucket link there....and start adding them.

INSTRUCTIONS for posting a photo on the board:
(Note - If you are already a member of photobucket, you do NOT need to visit photobucket.com every time, if you just want to add photos to your post).
1. Get to the board. Click 'Post'. Scroll down and click on 'Photobucket.com' link under the message text box and 'log in' to Photobucket (I made a screen shot, below, after I just logged in)
2. Click the drop down menu and find the 'Album' you want to place the photo in. (in the example photo below, it is 'philspruit').
3. Click the 'Browse' button and find the photo on your computer, open it, then click 'Upload'.
4. Wait until the photo uploads and after it does, it will appear in the first box and should be highlighted in blue (see below). If it is not, click the photo so it is highlighted.
5. Click the URL button and it should be changed into a yellow 'copied' button (see below). You have just placed the url into your clipboard. (NOTE: Photobucket may NOT change the URL box 'yellow/Copied' like it shows in the pic below. But it should highlight it blue. If your browser doesn't highlight it blue, then click your mouse and scroll over the entire link and highlight it. Now, right click on the highlight and then click 'Copy'.

6. Now go ahead, scroll back up and place your pointer into the 'Message Text' and paste the url (see below).

That's it!..................now scroll down and click the 'Preview' button to make sure your photo is showing.

Notes:
Leave a space, above and below, your URL you pasted in your post. (where your photo is going to appear in your text - here's an example)
Click the "preview" button, instead of the "post" button, first, to make sure everything works okay. This gives you a opportunity to edit everything to your liking. When your post IS to your liking, then you can go ahead and click "post". If it's not to your liking, you get the opportunity to keep trying, or you can keep editing, or not post anything at all.
One other note - If you are logged into Network 54 before posting, you will also have an opportunity to edit everything in your posting, at anytime, even if you accidentally hit the 'Post' button!
Really easy to do....give it a try!

Another way to load photos is from BEING ON the Photobucket.com website:
After you have successfully uploaded your photos on that website, you will now post the 'link' of the particular photo that you want in your post on our boards. When you are on that website and you see that photo, you are going to 'copy' the url (click on the DIRECT LINK) underneath the photo in your album at photobucket.com and then get back to the board and "paste that link" into your message text box on the board. That's all you need to do. Your photo will appear in your post.

One last note, you should be able to post photos on our boards using just about ANY photo share type website, IE - Photobucket, Picassa, Shutterfly, Flickr, etc.....

TIPS ON FORMATTING YOUR PHOTO
If you have a photo edit program like Adobe PHOTOSHOP, I like to edit & resize the photographs. Below is instructions using Adobe Photoshop 5.0.

  • 1    Open up your photo edit program & then open the file (photo) for editing.
  • 2    I select the CROP TOOL and eliminate areas that are not needed in the pic. In boat photos, there is usually alot of sky & water and this just keeps one from seeing the boat really well. Cropping out some of the water & sky will give you a photo that 'fills the computer monitor screen really well' with the boat. Most of the time my goal is to get the boat, front & centered in the photograph.
  • 3   After cropping, I usually need to resize the image so the internet displays it well, loads relatively fast and shows without one having to scroll up & down and left & right or making the boat look really small in the photo. To do that, in the top menu bar, select IMAGE, RESIZE, then IMAGE RESIZE. When the DOCUMENT SIZE box opens, I set the RESOLUTION to 100 pixels/inch. Then, change the WIDTH to 8.5" (height will fill in with whatever you cropped it at, so you don't need to do anything there). When you're done with changing those you should end up with photo dimensions that are about 1.25M pixels (this is also the overall size of the file).
  • 4    Last step is up to you but I usually click the ENHANCE menu, then click AUTO SMART FIX. If the photo looks worse, I'll go to EDIT and click UNDO. If I think the photo needs some work, I will usually ADJUST the Sharpness and ADJUST the Lighting levels manually. If the photo needs other work like color, etc., knock yourself out.
  • 5    At this stage, the photo should look very close to how it will appear on the internet. Click SAVE (if I want to overwrite the original file) or 'SAVE AS..'  and save your work in another folder (or rename your photo) so you DON'T overwrite your original file (photo).
I recomend the above tip on formatting your photographs BEFORE posting to your online 'photobucket-type' account on the internet (or emailing to the webmaster for publication on TVH website). It can be very helpful in a number of respects (esp when you have large, hi resolution photos, that were taken with a typical 5-10Mb digital camera) and really doesn't take much extra time!
Please note if you are going to have photo prints made, keep your hi-resolution photo around for just that.

*The instructions, from here on down, were written a many years ago, before our boards server (Network54.com) worked out a deal with Photobucket.com.

*Directions for posting photos on the boards using Network54 (The board's server)
This instructional page is done using a  browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer. Many other browsers are similar.
Network 54 (that host's this messageboard) is NOT Netscape Navigator OR Mozilla Firefox 'friendly' for setting up your files (photos).
Also, I don't have a clue on how to do this using a Mac, but this instructional page should give you a general idea.

1. Log in  . If you don't already have a log in account, then create yourself one first.
If this is your first time and you just registered (After you have created your account).....
This window will appear:

2. Click on the Express setup....(Let's forget about "setting up" for now....Let's get going on posting pixs....Okay!)

(If you already have registered, Log In and click My Account to find a window that looks like the one below)

The below window will now appear:
click on realms.

This next window opens up.....
Click on Create A New Realm

This next window opens up.....
Type a name in the box for this.....then click Done.
Note - The realm, which you just named, is your own disc space that Network54 is giving you free to store your files (photos).

(for training purposes, I will name my Realm - hydroplane2)

For the next few windows, just follow the directions I put on the screen

This next window opens up.....

This next window opens up.....

This next window opens up.....

A pop up box opens up on your window.....
At this stage you are going to pull a file(photo from your computer files).
Your files can't be bigger than 512K to post and the smaller the file, the more you can post because of the 1mb limit per account.
Hint - Most folks have more than one account, after they have filled their 1 mb limit.
Let's get back to posting....

When you go to click Open, the pop up window will disappear and the name of your file (pic) will be in the box under the name Upload file (left pane)...
When it appears, click the Upload button.

This next window opens up.....

Your photo from your computer will be uploaded to the server and your screen will look like this:
If you have more photos that you want to post, do this step again for each photo.
Congrat's, you have just uploaded a photo!....Now, let's get it posted to the board.

Get back to The Vintage Hydroplanes - Discussion Board.
Stay logged in.....
Click Post....
Then, click Insert Object.....
...this pop up screen will appear.
Now, click the name of your Realm. (In this case, hydroplane2).

Go ahead a type in whatever you want to say in you're post......PLEASE use your REAL name.

That's it!
Once you have your Realm setup......you need only need to 'Log In' on the Discussion Board and you can add additional photos by following the last 3 screens on this page.

Directions for posting a photo
that is currently on the internet somewhere

If you would like to post a photo that is currently on the internet somewhere and you want to post that photo.....it is VERY simple...you DO NOT need to perform the above...and you do not need to put the photo on your computer, then upload to another place (It's already there, you just need to copy the location/address of where it is on the internet.)

Here's what you do (Windows):
1. Get back to the Discussion Board and click "post".
2. Left click FILE (on your browser's toolbar above) and scroll down, then left click NEW WINDOW (which opens another window or new tab).
3. After the new window opens up, go the website/page and find the photo that you want to post.
4. Now, move your mouse so it is on top of the photo...RIGHT click on the photo and a pop up menu will appear...click on PROPERTIES (another pop up window opens).
5. See the Address (URL) info....left click and scroll to highlight all the info, then right click and click COPY. (you're done with getting the address and it is stored on your computer (clipboard).
6. Now.....get back to your window where you are going to post on our Discussion Board and go ahead & type in your post.....
hit Enter (to make a line for the photo that you want posted)......then right click and PASTE the address (url).

When you think you are done....scroll down the page to PREVIEW your posting to make sure your post and photo are acceptable.

Here's what you do (Apple):
For folks who own Apple computers and wish to post (on the Discussion Board) photos that currently exist on the internet, the procedure is VERY simple.
1. Get to the "post" window on the Discussion Board.
2. Open a NEW (second) browser WINDOW
3. After the new window opens, go to the website/page you desire and find the photo that you want to post.
4. Click on the photo you wish to post, then (holding the button down) "drag" and "drop" it into the "Message Text" block of the VH "response window".
5. Type in your post text and... Voila... you're done. Simple.

You may PREVEW your posting by clicking on the PREVIEW button.

(If you right click on the TVH logo above, then click Properties, you'll see what I mean about points 4 & 5 above).
