History of "S" class
The 136 Class (stock) 136 cid engines was brought in on a probationary basis in 1952, supplementing the 135 class (which allowed modifications).
Engines competing included - Ford V8 60, Studebaker Champ, Ferguson (tractor), and others.
In 1961, the 136 Class became known as the 145 Class, allowing Falcon, Corvair and Vega engines to compete. (Important, since the other engines had been long out of production).
In 1986, 145 Class became 2.5 Stock, but for only one year. 
In 1987, the 2.5 Stock Class became Formula Cobra.
In 1992, the Formula Cobra became 2.5 Stock Class and remains that class name, to present. (from Joe Schulte)
