Miss U.S. U-36 was commissioned in 1956 by Mr. George Simon of U.S. Equipment Company of Detroit. The builder was Henry Lauterbach. After only 3 races in 1957 and one race in 1958 followed by 54 years in storage, in 2011 the hull was completely rebuilt by Morin Boats of Bay City, Michigan.
The engine and drive was overhauled by George Czarnecki a respected, professional aircraft engine rebuilder of 40 years experience. Miss U.S. is one of less than 10 similar operational vintage Unlimited hydroplane boats of this type that survive today. This program was created to enable young and old to experience the sights, sounds and spectacle a vessel such as this creates today. Often referred to as "Thunder boats", unlimited hydroplanes were appropriately named from the sounds they created at high power. Miss U.S. is available for various shows both in water and out of water. She is maintained by an experienced crew and driven by Jack Schafer, an Unlimited hydroplane driver of many years experience.
